BC Minister of Transport and Social Welfare Ponnam Prabhakar said more support would be extended to women empowerment initiatives in the city.
The minister on Wednesday reviewed the ongoing development works and their progress at the GHMC headquarters with the commissioner, other commissioners, zonal and deputy commissioners and senior officials.
Highlighting the economic empowerment of women, Mr. Prabhakar said the government was working with a clear focus on welfare and livelihood. He said the number of self-help groups in Greater Hyderabad, currently over 72,942, should be increased to one lakh and every woman from a BPL family should enroll as a self-help group member.
With SETWIN’s support, women’s groups in the city would be given training in various livelihood options to make them self-reliant, he said. Recalling the success of providing electric buses to rural self-help groups as an additional source of income, the Minister said that 40 to 50 electric buses would be similarly allocated to women’s groups in Greater Hyderabad.
The officials briefed the minister on key programmes, including H-CITI, Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP), Strategic Nala Development Program (SNDP), Roads and Stormwater Drainage, Sanitation, Public Health, Town Planning, Women Welfare, Urban Self Help Groups, Environment and Air Quality under the National Clean Air Programme.
Mr. Prabhakar said that the responsibilities of GHMC officials would increase in the coming days and asked them to remain vigilant, prioritize redressal of public grievances and ensure timely completion of works. He emphasized the need for clear action plans and effective problem solving at the field level.
