Video showing Piotr Szczerek, CEO of Polish company Drugruk, while tennis player Kamil Majchrzak from a young US Open fan became viral at the weekend. The incident occurred after the match Majchrzakho Singles against Karen Khanov and captured Szczerek grabbed the hat from the boy on the stands.
On Monday, Szczerek published a detailed apology on Facebook and said he made a mistake when he thought the hat had been given him for his sons who had previously asked for autographs.
He wrote: “I take full responsibility for my extremely bad judgment and harmful actions. It was never my intention to steal the award -winning memento from a young fan. I was caught in the heat of the moment and the joy of victory … I sent the hat back to the boys and expanded my sincere apologies to his family.”
Szczerek stressed that neither he nor his family commented online or hired the legal council about the incident. He described it as “painful but necessary lesson in humility” and committed more to the initiatives supporting children and youth.
“In the future, I will be even more actively involved in initiatives supported by children and youth, and I will take steps against violence and hatred. I believe that only through steps I can rebuild the confidence I have lost. I apologize to everyone.”
Majchrzak meets with a young fan
Majchrzak, 29 years, also from Poland, reached into the boy’s family and met him to give him a new hat and take pictures. A video published in Majchrzak’s Instagram stories shows a boy named Brock, smiling and proudly wearing a hat while interacting with his family.
The tennis star wrote on Instagram: “Today I had a nice meeting after warming up. Do you get to know?” accompanied by an Emodji hat.
Majchrzak later shared a photo with Brock and the headline, “Hello the world, we wish you a great day along with Brock!”
