The Belagavi city police is planning to introduce a new type of beat system to prevent theft, housebreaking and other crimes.
The ‘Locked House Beat System’ will be implemented by local police in cooperation with residents. It involves targeting locked houses and guarding them.
Boras Police Commissioner Bhushan Gulabrao urged residents who are planning to go on vacation to check with their respective police station. They should share details such as their name and address, Google location code and the length of time they are likely to be away.
Officials will keep the information strictly confidential. It will be shared only with individual constables and officers assigned to the area.
According to police records, burglaries usually occur after midnight, when most people are fast asleep and the streets are deserted.
Beat staff will be asked to visit each locked home twice each night between 1:00am and 5:00am, patrolling the home and ensuring no theft is attempted. The inspection will be discreet, without disturbing the neighbors.
Mr. Borase told reporters that this was a participatory prevention activity and not surveillance. It is strictly voluntary and only those who want to participate will be involved. It will help build and maintain links between jurisdictional staff and local communities and help improve coordination and response times.
Those interested can seek police help by sending a message to 8277951146 or meet the officials concerned before locking their houses for a longer period.
