The Mumbai police dismissed rumors doing the rounds against a Mumbai woman who confronted Maharashtra minister Girish Mahajan over traffic restrictions and said no FIR has been registered against her. They also urged everyone to “verify facts from official channels before posting on social media and to refrain from spreading misinformation.”
The incident occurred on Tuesday (April 21) during a rally organized by the Bharatiya Janata Party to protest the opposition’s stance on the Women’s Reservation Act. The confrontation took place when Maharashtra state minister Girish Mahajan was speaking to reporters at a rally.
The woman was reportedly protesting road blockades caused by a political rally and expressed concern about the inconvenience faced by commuters.
Zen Sadavarte, daughter of advocate Gunaratna Sadavarte filed the complaint in this matter. However, the Mumbai Police clarified that though a complaint was received, no FIR was registered in the case.
“No FIR has been registered against the woman. We request everyone to verify facts from official channels before posting on social media and refrain from spreading misinformation,” he said.
All about viral video
A video that is being widely circulated on social media shows a woman confronting Maharashtra Water Resources Minister Girish Mahajan and police personnel in Mumbai’s Worli area.
A commuter whose car has been stuck in traffic for hours is seen getting out and walking into the middle of the rally. Visibly frustrated, she questions the disruption caused to the public and demands that the road be cleared.
At one point he yells, “Get out of here!” and points to a nearby open space, arguing that such gatherings could take place without blocking key roads.
Rally in Worli triggers traffic jam
The incident occurred during a protest march organized by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is part of the ruling Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra.
The demonstration targeted the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), including the Congress and its allies, over the rejection of the Women’s Reservation Act at the Centre.
Scheduled to start at 5 PM, the march reportedly started late, leading to severe traffic jams in the Worli area. The route ran from Jambhori Maidan to Dome through roads that usually see heavy traffic.
The woman seen in the video was said to be on her way to pick up her child from school when she was caught in an extended standstill.
What did the police say?
Deputy Commissioner of Police Krishnakant Upadhyay told news agency PTI, “It is clarified that no FIR has been registered against the woman who criticized traffic congestion and shouted at the agitators during the April 21 morcha near Jambhori Maidan in Worli.”
Mahajan had earlier said the woman’s anger was justified “to some extent”. However, he stressed that her language was inappropriate and ruled out any legal action against her.
