Police officer detained after allegedly trying to free relatives from Nedumangad police station

A circle inspector with the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB) was taken into police custody on Friday after he allegedly tried to forcefully free several detainees at the Nedumangad police station. The interior ministry has ordered an investigation into the police officer, who has been identified as Yahiya. According to official sources, the Nedumangad police in Chullimanoor arrested four people late on Thursday in connection with a football match dispute. The group, who were found to be transporting iron rods, were subsequently placed under lock-up at the police station.

Around midday on Friday, Mr Yahiya arrived at the police station and demanded the release of two of the detainees, saying they were his relatives. However, the service staff refused to release them after claiming that the investigation into the alleged incident was still ongoing.

The officer then allegedly entered the station, proceeded towards the locked area and attempted to release the detainee. He also caused a ruckus inside the station when other officers prevented him from doing so. He was soon taken into custody. It is suspected that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
