On Friday (June 20, 2025), the state President Bharatiya Janata (BJP), Sukant Majumdar, Friday 20th June 2025) was detained in Calcutta in Bhawanipore, while trying to meet a doctor NRI, who protested at the beginning of this year.
Chaos took place on Friday afternoon in Bhawanipore when Mr. Majumdar tried to walk through Harish Mukherjee Road in Bhawanipore in the south of Calcutta to meet Dr. Rajat Subhra Banerjee. First, Mr. Majumdar’s vehicle was stopped on the way. Then, from the middle of the large crowd of BJP supporters and media workers, he and the doctor were detained and transported to the police headquarters in Calcutta, Lalbazar in the police car.
“The house of Dr. Rajata is located on the 186C Harish Mukherjee Road, adjacent to the Trinamool Rinamool Residence. The doctor laid down the Chief Minister during her visit to Kellogg College.
The legislature of BJP said the doctor invited him to his house for tea and accused the police of blocking his vehicle in approaching the doctor’s house and jamming the journey for hours.
“Today, when I went to visit Dr. Banerjee in his residence, I was blocked by a dust -free, servile Kolkata Police – acting on the direct orders of Mamata Banerjee. It’s not just shameful – it’s an obvious attack on personal freedom and guarantees of fundamental rights in democracy.”
Dr. Rajat was released from Lalbazar a few hours later. After abandoning the police headquarters in Kolkata, he told Mediaperson that he was a British passport and an overseas citizen of India, and took legal steps against the police for “physically assault”.
“My house is behind Abhisheka Banerjee’s house. That’s why we couldn’t enter. I lived in a foreign country for 25 years and I haven’t experienced something like that. I felt sick and panic affected when he caught me and put me in a police vehicle.
He argued that he was “focused” on asking questions of the main minister during her visit to Oxford University.
When he responded to development, the spokesman of the Congress Trinamool Kunal Ghosh said Dr. Rajat could wait until the end of the main minister’s address at Kellogg College and later asked his questions: “Instead of disrupting her speech”.
“We believe in democracy. Otherwise, I would demand to be thrown out of Bengal. The interruption of the main minister can not be called dissent during her speech; it is uncontrolled.
