The Gadchiroli Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on Wednesday (February 18, 2026) demolished 44 memorials erected by Maoists across the district.

The operation, involving around 800 personnel from 18 teams, including C-60 anti-Naxal force, bomb detection and disposal unit and CRPF, was carried out in remote forest areas. The monuments were under the jurisdiction of 15 police stations and sub-stations in regions like Pengunda, Kawande and Tumarkothi, which are considered Maoist strongholds.

Eighteen structures were demolished in Etapalli and 17 in Hedri sub-divisions. Monuments were demolished at Bhamragad (5), Jimlagatta (2), Dhanora (1) and Pendhari (1).

Superintendent of Police Nilotpal said the exercise was part of ongoing efforts to dismantle the physical infrastructure of the Maoist movement in the region. He noted that due to sustained anti-Maoist campaigns, the activities of the insurgent group have died down in recent years.

“The Gadchiroli police is committed to creating a safe environment for citizens. The demolition of these symbols of violence is to reinforce this commitment and build confidence among the villagers,” Mr. Nilotpal said. The demolition drive was led by Additional Superintendents of Police M. Ramesh (Traffic), Kartik Madheera and Gokul Raj G. (Administration) along with Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Vishal Nagargoj.

The operation underscores the changing security environment in Gadchiroli, where the administration is focusing on development and security after years of insurgency. Police urged citizens not to be misled by Maoist propaganda and support the administration’s efforts for lasting peace.
