Police in the district have intensified preparations to curb incidents associated with New Year celebrations. On Wednesday, New Year’s Eve, they formed a special unit to maintain law and order.
Led by District Superintendent of Police Ajit Kumar, the 1,500-member police force will be on high alert on Wednesday night. The deployment includes six DySPs, 28 inspectors, 145 sub-inspectors, 1,225 civilian policemen and 92 policewomen.
According to police sources, special forces will keep a close eye on those involved in anti-social activities and are taking measures to prevent drug use and consumption of alcohol in public places. In addition, routine vehicle checks will be carried out and security will be strengthened at the district’s borders.
The police will keep a close eye on New Year’s DJ parties organized in tourist spots, clubs, hotels and restaurants. Police said drug raids would be stepped up and party organizers would face legal action if any drug use was found.
Police said action would be taken against people bursting firecrackers on roads and other public spaces as well as those writing graffiti on the streets. Violators of microphone regulations and firecracker rules will also face legal action.
Mr. Ajit Kumar said that all the bars in the district must close by 11 pm and that the New Year celebrations should end at the same time.
