The North Zone Police has issued a public advisory urging residents to take precautionary measures to secure their homes during the Christmas, New Year and Sankranti festive season, when many people are expected to travel to their native places.
Homes left unattended during the holidays are susceptible to theft and other property crimes. Members of the public were advised to ensure all doors and windows are properly locked prior to departure and were asked to inform their local police station of their departure and expected date of return to enable focused patrolling of residential areas.
Residents were also asked to notify neighbors or local watch committees so that someone could keep an eye on their homes in their absence. The police have proposed the use of CCTV cameras, security alarms with motion sensors and central locking to increase security.
The advice warned against leaving visible signs of vacancy such as newspapers, rubbish or milk cartons outside homes, and recommended storing valuables, cash and jewelery in bank lockers rather than leaving them at home. People were also advised not to leave spare keys in hidden places and to avoid sharing travel plans or live locations on social media until they return.
Vehicle owners have been asked to park their vehicles on their premises, ensure they are locked and use other safety devices where possible. Police said local stations will maintain records of vacant homes and increase day and night patrols in areas where residents are away.
