Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the first remarks after US President Donald Trump announced a trade deal between India and America after months of a standoff, thanking the US president for cutting tariffs to 18 percent. PM Modi said he was “delighted” that Made in India products would now face 18 percent customs duty.

PM Modi said, “Great to speak with my dear friend President Trump today. I am delighted that Made in India products will now have a reduced tariff of 18%. A big thank you to President Trump on behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India for this wonderful announcement.”

“When two major economies and the world’s largest democracies work together, it benefits our people and opens up enormous opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation. President Trump’s leadership is vital for global peace, stability and prosperity. India fully supports his peace efforts.”

“I look forward to working closely with him to take our partnership to unprecedented heights,” he said.

What Trump announced about US-India trade

PM Modi’s remarks came just minutes after Donald Trump announced the India-America trade deal on Truth Social, where he announced that the two leaders also talked about “ending the war with Russia and Ukraine”.

Trump said: “It was an honor to speak with Prime Minister Modi of India this morning. He is one of my best friends and a powerful and respected leader of his country. We talked about many things, including trade and ending the war with Russia and Ukraine. He has agreed to stop buying Russian oil and buy a lot more from the United States and potentially from Venezuela. This will help END any war that is now in Ukraine and thousands of people. week!”

Announcing the trade deal, the US president said: “Out of friendship and respect for Prime Minister Modi and at his request, we have agreed to a US-India Trade Agreement, effective immediately, under which the United States will charge a reduced reciprocal tariff, reducing it from 25% to 18%. It will also move to reduce its tariffs and non-tariff barriers against the United States to ZERO.

“The Prime Minister also committed to “BUY AMERICAN” at a much higher level, in addition to more than $500 BILLION for energy, technology, agriculture, coal and many other products in the US.
