Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered Savitribai Phule on her birth anniversary on Saturday, hailing her as a trailblazing social reformer who dedicated her life to transforming society through service and education.
“On the birth anniversary of Savitribai Phule, we remember a pioneer whose life was dedicated to transforming society through service and education,” PM Modi said in a message on X.
PM Modi said that Savitribai Phule is committed to the principles of equality, justice and compassion.
“Phule strongly believed that education was the most powerful tool for social change and dedicated her life to transforming lives through knowledge and learning,” the Prime Minister said.
PM Modi said Phule’s work in caring for the vulnerable and marginalized remains an inspiring example of service and humanity.
The Prime Minister said Phule’s vision continues to guide the nation’s efforts to build an inclusive and empowered society.
Savitribai Phule, married to Jyotiba Phule, a revered social reformer herself, was born in 1831 in Maharashtra and is considered by many to be India’s first female teacher for her pioneering work in educating women – especially from disadvantaged groups – when it was considered taboo.
PM Modi also paid tribute to Rani Vela Nachiyar on her birth anniversary. He said, “She is remembered as one of India’s bravest warriors who epitomized courage and tactical mastery.”
“She rose against colonial oppression and asserted the right of Indians to govern themselves. Her commitment to good governance and cultural pride is also admirable. Her dedication and visionary leadership will motivate generations,” PM Modi wrote on X.
