PM Modi talks to Amir of Qatar, condoles death of Amir’s father | Today’s news

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke to the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and expressed his heartfelt condolences on the demise of the Amir’s father, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

The Prime Minister also said that the late leader’s lasting legacy will continue to lead the two countries to further strengthen their strategic partnership.

Amir’s father died on July 12 at the age of 74.

Following his death, the central government declared a one-day state mourning on 13 July as a mark of respect, with the national flag flown at half-mast across the country.

What did PM Modi say?

“He spoke with His Holiness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of Qatar, and expressed his sincere condolences on the passing of His Holiness the Amir’s father, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

“He recalled his deep affection for India, his warmth towards the Indian community in Qatar and his unwavering commitment to India-Qatar relations. His lasting legacy will continue to guide our two countries in further strengthening our strategic partnership,” Modi said in a post on ‘X’.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju was sent by the Center to condole with the Amir of Qatar on the death of his father on behalf of the Government and people of India.

Rijiju, Minister for Parliamentary and Minority Affairs, traveled to Doha on July 14 to offer condolences on behalf of India. Father Amir ruled Qatar for 18 years before abdicating in 2013.

Modi had earlier expressed his condolences, describing Amir’s father as a “visionary leader who led Qatar to a great level of development and prosperity” and recalled their meeting during his visit to Qatar in February 2024.
