Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday traveled by Delhi Metro to reach Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) in North Delhi to attend the centenary celebrations of the institution. The Prime Minister was also seen interacting with students and fellow travelers during the trip.

What did PM Modi say about SRCC?

Modi had earlier praised SRCC’s long-standing contribution to higher education and its role in nurturing generations of professionals and leaders.

In a post on X, the prime minister said, “In a moment, at 7 pm, I will be at the iconic Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) in Delhi to participate in the centenary celebrations of this university. Over the years, this college has distinguished itself and created a brand for academic excellence, institution building and nurturing generations of public life and business leaders,” he said.

Why is SRCC’s centenary significant?

Affiliated to the University of Delhi, Shri Ram College of Commerce is among India’s leading institutions of higher education, particularly in the fields of business, economics and management.

The college was founded in 1926 by industrialist and philanthropist Sir Shri Ram. Over the past century, it has produced scholars, experts, administrators, entrepreneurs, politicians and other nation-builders.

The centenary celebrations mark a significant milestone for this institution, which has built a strong reputation for higher education and has seen generations of students contribute to business, public life and society.

A key part of the Prime Minister’s visit is expected to be his interaction with Gen Z students.

The session is likely to provide an opportunity for students to share their views, aspirations and concerns directly with Modi and engage with issues that matter to young people.

‘SRCC Alumni are ‘OG”’

Meanwhile, Modi lauded SRCC as the institution celebrated its 100th anniversary, highlighting the reputation of its graduates in various fields. He also described the college’s graduates as “OGs”.

Addressing students and guests at SRCC University of Delhi during the centenary celebrations of its anniversary, Modi said the name of the school itself carries considerable recognition within the university.

Reflecting on SRCC’s position among Delhi University’s colleges, Modi said, “Even today, when someone in Delhi University asks which college you are from, saying ‘SRCC’ speaks for itself. Simply saying ‘SRCC’ is itself a flex.”

The Prime Minister also spoke about the college’s alumni and recalled his interactions with former Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who studied at SRCC.

He said, “SRCC alumni were also very special. In your language, I would say that the alumni here are the OGs. They have taken the SRCC name all over the world and made a mark in various fields. Our Arun Jaitley studied here. And I can say that there was hardly a meeting with him where he did not share the same incident from his SRCC days, because today I told again, Sanje and I tired it again. Sanyal, who is part of my team, is an alumnus SRCC We also have many other colleagues here and it is not that SRCC only produces people from the world of economics, from artists to politicians, lawyers and judges.
