Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to 10-month-old Aalin Sherin Abraham, who became Kerala’s youngest organ donor after her death in a road accident earlier this month.
In the 131st episode of his Mann ki Baat programme, Mr Modi said her parents’ decision to donate her organs “reveals the breadth of their thinking and the magnitude of their personality”. Mr. Modi further added that although little Aalin is no more, “her name has made it among the youngest organ donors in the country.”
“She left this world at the age of just 10 months. Imagine – she had a whole life ahead of her that ended suddenly. So many dreams and joys remained unfulfilled. The pain her parents must have gone through cannot be expressed in words. But despite such deep pain, Aalin’s father Arun Abraham and mother Sherin filled Aalin’s heart with every decision that citizen Aalin made.” This single decision reveals the scope of their thinking and the greatness of their personality,” the Prime Minister said.
The Prime Minister also used the opportunity to highlight the importance of organ donation. According to him, the awareness of organ donation in India is constantly increasing. “It helps those in need. It also strengthens medical research in the country. Many organizations and individuals are doing extraordinary work in this direction,” he said.
Aalin from Malappally in Pathanamthitta district was declared brain dead following an accident on MC Road on February 5 after the car she was traveling in with her mother and maternal grandparents collided with another vehicle.
570 types of rice
In his programme, Mr. Modi also mentioned the Maha Magha festival called Kumbh of the South, which was held in Tirunavaya in February. He said that Kerala Kumbh was successfully held this time without any major announcement. “Whether it is Maha Kumbh or Kerala Kumbh, it is not just a bathing festival. It is a commemorative reawakening of memory. It is a re-commemoration of culture. From north to south the rivers may be different, the banks may be different, but the flow of faith is the same – that is Bharat,” he said.
The Prime Minister also welcomed a village in Thrissur district that is home to 570 varieties of rice in one field. “This includes local varieties, herbal varieties and even varieties imported from other states. This is not just farming, it is a massive campaign to preserve the seed heritage,” he said.
