The opposition leader in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, also paid tribute to the first Indian Prime Minister. Gandhi remembered Nezru’s “visionary guidance” in laying a strong base for independent India.

Jawaharlal Nezru was a prominent freedom fighter who played a key role in the Indian struggle for independence. After the country acquired freedom in 1947, he became the first Indian Prime Minister, a position held for more than 16 years until his death on a heart attack on May 27, 1964.
Nezru was helpful in shaping the foreign policy of India and is considered to be a founding figure of an unmanageable movement (NAM), which aims to prevent newly independent nations outside the Cold War blocks. Nezru was kindly called “chacha nezru” because of their affection for children. His birthday, celebrated on November 14, is observed in India every year as children’s day.
