Prime Minister Narendra Modi has substantially reduced the strength of his convoy, days after urging people to use fuel-powered vehicles judiciously amid the crisis in West Asia, a move followed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief ministers in several states.
The size of Mr. Modi’s fleet has been reduced while ensuring that all core components of his security arrangements remain in line with Special Protection Group (SPG) protocols. After his appeal during a recent speech in Hyderabad, the decision was reportedly implemented during his visits to Gujarat and Assam. The prime minister also requested that his convoy include already available electric vehicles.
Following Mr Modi’s call, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered a 50% cut in escort vehicles for himself and his cabinet colleagues. He also asked people to reduce fuel consumption and avoid unnecessary purchase of gold as suggested by Mr. Modi. BJP-led governments in Delhi, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Bihar have also taken similar decisions. Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi has canceled a planned visit to the US
On Tuesday (May 12, 2026), the BJP said Mr Modi’s call to avoid unnecessary gold purchases and foreign travel was voluntary, precautionary and aimed at protecting India’s economy. In a press conference, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said that there is no shortage of any essential commodity in the country and that the government has taken effective measures to protect oil, gas and foreign exchange reserves.
India, now among the world’s fastest-growing economies under Mr. Modi’s leadership, faced every challenge with strength and confidence, a BJP spokesman said. Despite 70 days of war in West Asia, there was no shortage of oil in the country and fuel prices did not rise. The government has also taken several concrete steps that have led to a nearly 30% increase in domestic oil and gas production, Mr. Bhatia said.
