The Congress on Friday (Nov 21, 2025) said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “safe and secure” attending the G20 summit as US President Donald Trump decided to boycott it.
In a post on X, Congress General Secretary (Communications), Jairam Ramesh wanted to know if the “huglomacy” with “my good friend” would be resumed at the group’s next summit in America.
Prime Minister Modi on Friday embarked on a three-day visit to South Africa to attend the G20 Summit in Johannesburg.
Avoiding Trump
“The Prime Minister is attending the G20 summit in South Africa today and tomorrow. He is doing so safely and securely because President Trump and the US are boycotting the summit. Recall that Mr. Modi did not go to Kuala Lumpur for the India-ASEAN summit a few days ago because then he would have to meet President Trump face to face,” added US Secretary of State Mr. Marco X, Rumesh said: that the US opposes the South African G20 themes of solidarity, equality and sustainability on the grounds that they represent anti-Americanism.
The Congress president pointed out that the G20 presidency rotates annually, with India taking over from Indonesia in November 2023 and Brazil taking over in November 2024.
“Now South Africa has to hand over to the US who will not be there. So the next G20 summit in a year will be in the US. By then India’s trade (or) deal with the US will probably be done. But if in the last seven months President Trump has said 61 times that he has stopped Operation Sindoor, imagine how many times he will repeat that my good friend in the next twelve months.” be revived or there will be just a handshake or Mr. Modi will refuse,” Mr. Ramesh said.
