Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (Nov 3, 2025) urged BJP MPs from West Bengal to keep the ongoing special intensive review (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state “live” and asked them not to become a subject of controversy.
During the Parliament session, the Prime Minister meets BJP MPs in state groups. After meeting his party’s MPs from Assam on Tuesday, he met MPs from West Bengal the next day. With West Bengal going to polls soon, Mr. Modi reportedly told MPs that the SIR was only to ensure that eligible voters were included in the electoral rolls and ineligible ones were removed.
The opposition has been constantly protesting the ongoing SIR in 12 states and a debate on electoral reforms with reference to the SIR is scheduled to be held in both houses of parliament next week.
“Focus on ground level work”
Mr. Modi also took stock of local issues in West Bengal, asked MPs to focus on ground-level work and reminded them of the BJP’s growth in the state, so that it now occupies the primary opposition space in the state. He also asked about the recent attack on BJP leader Khagen Murmu.
The delegation of MPs included West Bengal BJP chief Shamik Bhattacharya and Union ministers Shantanu Thakur and Sukanta Majumdar. West Bengal is expected to elect a new assembly early next year and the BJP has named Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav as the party in-charge for the poll, along with former Tripura chief minister and Lok Sabha MP Biplab Deb as co-in-charge.
