Samagra Shiksha Assistant State Project Officer (ASPO) MR Prasanna Kumar said on Friday (November 7) that mental health and career counselors are crucial in educational institutions as they provide holistic support for students’ well-being and future success.
Mr. Prasanna Kumar, who participated in the “Mental Health and Career Counsellor Training Programme” at Maris Stella College, Vijayawada, said that mental health counselors help students cope with stress, anxiety and depression, while career counselors guide them in choosing a career path according to their strengths and interests. “Together, they create a supportive environment that improves academic performance, develops life skills and improves overall resilience and student satisfaction,” he said.
Mr. Kumar said there was a proposal to appoint mental health and career guidance counselors in each mandal and called upon the trained counselors to further train teachers and students at the field level. He advised them to look at the problems of the students with empathy and provide them with appropriate and timely guidance.
Secretary, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs), D. Devananda Reddy spoke about the vital role of counselors in boosting mental health and self-esteem among students. He said that early signs of psychological stress in adolescent girls must be identified immediately and emphasized the importance of creating a safe, caring and inspiring environment at KGBV.
