Tension prevailed at the campus of Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University here on Friday as several students marched into the campus raising slogans and demanding an increase in their monthly stipends in the presence of police.
The hunger strike began with a road blockade on Thursday after a week of agitation over what students see as insufficient allowances that do not cover basic expenses. The students alleged that repeated appeals to the school management and government officials remained unanswered.
Even as police personnel entered the campus to control the students, three students climbed onto the roof of the school cafeteria building and threatened to jump if their demands were not met. The campus building erupted with slogans of “we want justice” and accused the authorities of neglecting the welfare of students. The students said they were ready to sacrifice their lives to force favorable action.
