Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader MK Muneer, MLA, has alleged that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is suffering from “selective amnesia” due to the Left Democratic Front’s (LDF) past engagements with the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) and its political arm, the Welfare Party of India (WPI).
Addressing a ‘meet the leader’ event held at the Calicut Press Club here on Monday (December 8), he said that the people of the state, however, clearly remember what happened in the past. Mr. Vijayan accuses the United Democratic Front (UDF) of allying with the JIH. However, it was LDF that allied with JIH when it was not even active in politics. He showed a campaign poster released during the 2015 polls when the LDF was seeking votes for the WPI candidate. Supporting the UDF to ensure the progress of the state was termed as regressive, while the same organization supporting the LDF for the same purpose was hailed as progressive, said Dr. Muneer.
He alleged that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) was targeting the alleged association of the UDF with the WPI to divert attention from the Sabarimala gold theft case. “The Kerala High Court has rightly termed it as a case of the fence that ate the crop. Senior leaders of the CPI(M), including one who served as an MLA and another who was the president of the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB), are now in jail. Those in the TDB themselves allegedly sold gold,” he said.
Dr. Muneer claimed that though similar allegations were also made in connection with the case of smuggling of gold from diplomatic baggage, the whole episode lost its weight. None of the allegations leveled by Swapna Suresh, an accused in the case, were pursued, he claimed.
