Leader of Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan urged Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala to take strict action against the alleged “orchestrated” attack by Youth Congress workers and the police on a university hostel in Thiruvananthapuram. In a letter to the home minister, the CPI(M) veteran alleged that the Youth Congress’ decision to start its march from the hostel premises instead of the usual protest sites was a deliberate attempt to incite violence. He claimed that a group of 200 people surrounded the hostel with weapons including machetes, rocks and beer bottles and threw burning torches onto the premises.

He also claimed that despite available video footage showing Youth Congress workers, including its district president, pelting stones towards the hostel, neither the organization’s management nor the police intervened to stop them.

According to Mr. Vijayan, the situation escalated when the police allegedly entered the hostel by breaking open the gate without the permission of the warden, allegedly to restore order, and assaulted the Students Federation of India (SFI) activists. He also alleged that SFÚ state secretary PS Sanjeev, who reached the spot to pacify the students on the instructions of senior police officers, was beaten up by the police.

In addition, three students suffered serious head injuries and nearly 40 others were assaulted. He also claimed that the attackers stopped an ambulance carrying injured students. Mr. Vijayan also criticized the police for allegedly failing to invoke the non-bailable provisions of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act against Youth Congress leaders accused of damaging public property, while registering cases under the non-bailable provisions against CPI(M) leaders Kadakampally Surendran and V. Joy for protesting alleged police excesses.
