The government has intervened in the best way to ensure that all modern cancer care facilities are available in the public sector, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said.
He said several advanced medical technologies are now available at the Regional Cancer Center, including the first robotic surgery unit in the public sector, a HIPEC treatment system, a clinical laboratory monitoring system and surface-guided radiation therapy used in radiation therapy.
The government has set up sophisticated facilities including cath labs, Gallium Scan, PET-CT Scan, KV imaging equipment Ring Gantry Linear Accelerator, advanced brachytherapy machine for prostate cancer treatment, digital mammography machine and pediatric autologous stem cell transplant services at RCC, Mr. Vijayan said.
He was speaking after inaugurating the new multi-storied building at RCC and the new Kerala Center for Disease Control (K-CDC).
Constructed at a cost of ₹ 242 crore, with a built-up area of 3,30,117 sq ft, the new building was necessary to reduce overcrowding and provide better treatment facilities to the 2.5 lakh patients who seek care at the RCC annually.
The new building adds an additional 200 patient beds as well as two levels of parking. The building was built in accordance with green protocols and uses solar energy as much as possible.
RCC was also allotted 12 acres at Pulayanarkotta for setting up a second campus
Health Minister Veena George, who presided over the function, said more than 2,000 cancer care beds are now available in the public sector.
General Education Minister V. Sivankutty, Kadakampally Surendran, K. Ansalan and CK Hareendran, all MLAs and senior health officials were present.
