President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President CP Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and other senior leaders joined a function here at Samvidhan Sabha to celebrate the 199th birth anniversary of social reformer Mahatma Jyotirao Phule. Several state governments also organized programs to remember Phule.
After paying tribute to Phula, Mrs Murmu said the reformer had dedicated his life to the upliftment of marginalized communities. Born on 11 April 1827 in Katgun village in Satara district of Maharashtra, Phule is known for his contribution to society, especially for the education of women in the marginalized classes. He died on November 28, 1890.
