The Telangana Drugs Control Administration (DCA) has directed all pharmacies across the state to maintain proper prescription records while dispensing drugs such as anabolic-androgenic steroids and cardiac stimulants to prevent their misuse for bodybuilding purposes.
The directive follows a recent enforcement drive by the DCA where gyms and fitness centers in Hyderabad were found to be illegally buying and selling these prescription drugs, including mephentermine injections, to gym goers. The DCA noted that if these drugs are misused for non-therapeutic purposes, they can lead to serious health consequences such as cardiovascular disorders, hormonal imbalances, psychiatric disorders and even death.
DCA reiterated the regulatory framework and reminded all licensees that anabolic-androgenic steroids and cardiac stimulants are prescription drugs that must only be sold with a valid prescription issued by a registered medical practitioner. Any illegal sale, misuse or distribution of these drugs for the purpose of abuse is a violation of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act of 1940 and will require stricter action, including license revocation and prosecution under the Act.
