To create awareness and strengthen collaboration between private hospitals and regulatory bodies, the Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes Association (PHANA) organized a workshop on biomedical waste management for its member institutions at the Karnataka Medical Council auditorium in Bengaluru.
J. Chandra Babu, Regional Director, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) spoke at the seminar, which brought together regulators, service providers and hospital administrators to discuss the compliance requirements in detail.
Mr. Babu outlined the latest Biomedical Waste Management Rules, including barcode mechanisms, documentation standards and the responsibility of healthcare institutions in ensuring safe disposal of biomedical waste. He emphasized that strict compliance with environmental regulations is necessary to protect public health and prevent environmental damage.
Officials of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) also attended and clarified the operational and regulatory aspects of the implementation. Answered questions from hospital representatives regarding statutory procedures, timelines and compliance standards.
The seminar was attended by member hospitals from all over Bengaluru and neighboring districts. Administrators and senior medical professionals raised practical concerns regarding the cost of bar codes, record maintenance, compliance time, and coordination with authorized waste management agencies.
PHANA President Shobha Prakash said the initiative aims to create awareness and strengthen collaboration between hospitals and regulatory bodies. “Our aim is to ensure that member institutions clearly understand the rules and apply them in a practical and sustainable way,” she said.
The seminar concluded with an interactive session that allowed the participants to directly connect with officials from CPCB and KSPCB. PHANA said it will continue to hold similar training programs, including meetings for hospital management and human resources teams, once the labor code rules are announced.
