Postgraduate resident doctors at Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, who went on a day-long strike on Tuesday over non-payment of their monthly stipend by the college administration, have threatened to resume the strike as many of them are yet to receive their stipend for the month of April.
The Kerala Medical Postgraduates Association (KMPGA) said more than 200 local doctors were not given the scholarship due to an administrative failure. The management of the medical school failed to verify and send scholarship bills to the treasury on time, which led to the current situation, she said.
KMPGA said it has officially informed the director and director of medical education that if the stipend bills from the treasury are not paid by Thursday evening, it will resume the strike on Friday and continue until every local doctor receives the stipend.
Local doctors said that despite repeated assurances from the authorities that the stipend bills would be sent to the treasury on time, the payment of stipends is delayed every month.
The KMPGA has demanded immediate disciplinary action against the administrative staff in the college office responsible for the repeated delay in the payment of scholarships. If the stipend bills for the month of May are not approved by the fifth working day of June, the resident doctors will give a strike notice the very next day, KMPGA warned.
