US-Iran War News Update
As mediators push to revive stalled US-Iranian diplomacy six months after the war, Washington on Thursday showed no interest in reviving the June memorandum of understanding. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt complicated diplomatic efforts to resume talks, saying US President Donald Trump “continues to leave all options on the table” when it comes to Iran.
In the midst of America’s economic campaign to pressure Tehran, Leavitt said in an interview with Fox News, “We had Operation Epic Fury to destroy their military. Now we have Operation Economic Outcast to destroy their economy.” She added: “There are no negotiations going on at this point and that will continue until the president feels that maybe they will come to the table in a meaningful way.” In order for the US to aggressively push for economic sanctions, it must take action against Iran’s trading partners, including China and India.
Earlier in the day, Qatar’s prime minister visited Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway between Iran and Oman through which about 20% of global energy supplies passed before the war. Although major combat operations were halted for weeks, little progress was made toward a broader peace agreement.
While Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani urged a return to diplomacy during talks with Iran’s chief negotiator Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi urged regional neighbors to prevent the US from using their territory to launch military or economic attacks on Iran.
