Pest infestation in besan flour, atta and dals, rotten vegetables, poor sanitation, clogged drains filled with meat waste and sale of food products with expired FSSAI licenses were among the many serious violations detected by Telangana Food Safety officials during an inspection at Lulu Hypermarket in Hyderabad on Monday (May 18, 2026) following a complaint.
According to the Telangana Food Safety Department, officials during the inspection found widespread irregularities within the hypermarket’s indoor kitchen, retail and butcher shop.
In the area of the own kitchen, officials observed poor hygienic conditions and the presence of pests. Rotten vegetables were found on the premises, food leftovers stored in refrigerators were thrown away. Authorities also discovered packaged foods with torn and misleading labels that are close to expiration.
In the retail section, insect infestation was found in besan flour, atta and dal products. Officials have also identified packaged foods with expired FSSAI license. Several labeling and display violations were observed, including the absence of nutritional information, FSSAI license details and manufacturers’ addresses on food products.
Drains in the butchery section were found clogged with meat waste emitting a pungent odor that officials say poses a serious public health concern.
As part of the enforcement action, approx. 150 kg of food, including sweets, oils, flour and legumes, attacked by pests were secured and disposed of. Food samples suspected of adulteration, excessive use of artificial colors and pest infestation in besan flour were collected and sent for laboratory analysis.
The ministry also issued a public advisory urging consumers to remain vigilant when purchasing food products from supermarkets, retail stores, bakeries and restaurants.
