A dead person was found at his farm in Hanumanthapura near Holehonnur in Bhadravathi taluk on Sunday. His body was charred.
The deceased, identified as H. Suresh, 56, worked as a lecturer in a private college in Shivamogga. He is survived by his wife and two children. He left home on Saturday and informed his family members that he would attend the program.
Officers found his two-wheeler and bag at the scene. Senior police officers, including Superintendent of Police Shivamoggy B. Nikhil, visited the spot. A forensic team also arrived at the scene as part of the investigation. It is not clear whether this is a case of self-immolation or murder. The police are registering a case of suspicious death.
