As part of the measure aimed at providing relief to pedestrians, the Highways Department will construct a pedestrian footbridge (FOB) at the Madhya Kailash junction in Adyar.
The facility was planned at the time the flyover at the intersection was designed. The FOB at Rajiv Gandhi Salai near the junction was dismantled to facilitate the construction of the flyover.
The design of the 127 m long and 5.5 m wide pedestrian facility is being examined by experts from IIT-Madras. Sources in the road department said the junction witnesses 1,510 pedestrians per hour during peak hours, which means at least 10,000 pedestrians cross it every day.
“It is very difficult for people to cross the road as the traffic is quite heavy on both the main roads. If the traffic police are present, they will stop vehicles to allow people to cross the road. Otherwise, we are at the mercy of motorists,” said Surendra, a frequent commuter to Taramani.
The FOB would enable pedestrians near KV CLRI School to reach Kasturibai Nagar MRTS station or reach the bus stop near Madhya Kailash Temple on Rajiv Gandhi Salai or walk to the bus stop near Regional Labor Institute on Sardar Patel Road. All three entry/exit points will have escalators and elevators.
An official source said they have written to the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority seeking permission to connect the FOB with the MRTS station.
