For most of the time, retirement is to slow down. But for Shahjahan, who left Keral on May 31, he signaled the beginning of a bold new mission.
Moments after completing 31 years to the police Kerala Mr. Shahjahan tied to the helmet, jumped on the bike and started a solo ride of 2,025 km in all 14 districts of Kerala. The mission of his journey was to fight drug abuse directly to the streets, schools and hearts of youth.
This is not the first time Mr. Shahjahan in the saddle. At the age of 50 he passed through the state of 1700 km throughout the state and led the campaign for the safety of helmets and safety – the path that brought him a certificate of recognition from the then head of the state police Ločnath Behera.
This time, however, the bets are higher and the cause is much more urgent.
“Increasing drug use is a quiet epidemic. It tears families, disrupts communities and threatens the future of our nation. I wanted to use my retirement not as a goal but as a beginning,” he said.
Now in the last stage of his 33 -day expedition, Mr. Shahjahan arrived in Pathanamthitty on Saturday. He was warmly accepted by the representative of the police director of narcotics B. Anil. “Such effort inspires the event. It is so rare to see how someone devotes their lives after retirement such noble things,” the clerk said.
Mr. Shahjahan’s journey overwhelmed the entire length and width of Kerala, which covered busy cities to coastal cities and remote villages. In places like Ernakula, he jumped on the subway with his bike to join the commuting. In Thrissur and Malappurama, the local communities joined him to parts of the road. Even hilly terrains of Wayanada and Attrappads were not outside the limits.
“Drug abuse will not stop at the city limit. Therefore, I have to achieve every corner,” he explains.
At each stop, Mr. Shahjahan dealt with locals, especially students and parents. During these interviews, he focused not only on the consequences of drug addiction, but also on the importance of consciousness, prevention and collective responsibility.
Mr. Shahjahan considers his ride to be an extension of these efforts and transmits a message deep into communities where forced does not have to get.
“That’s my little contribution to a much bigger fight,” he says with Pokora.
