Opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker Waheed ur Rehmaan Parra in the J&K House has moved a bill on the status of administrative division for Chenab Valley and Pir Panjal Valley in Jammu division.
The PDP introduced as a private member’s Bill titled The Jammu and Kashmir Territorial Administrative Reorganization Bill, 2026 seeks new administrative divisions, including Chenab Division with headquarters at Doda and Pir Panjal Division with headquarters at Rajouri, in addition to the existing Jammu and Kashmir divisions.
The proposal also called for new districts in Jammu and Kashmir. “The proposal proposes to empower the government to allocate new districts to Jammu, Kashmir, Chenab or Pir Panjal divisions, taking into account factors such as geographical continuity, administrative convenience, socio-cultural cohesion and balanced regional development,” it said.
It suggested there were “challenges arising from the vast geographical spread, difficult terrain and regional differences”. The bill, the PDP said, seeks to “institutionalise a transparent mechanism for the creation of new administrative units to strengthen decentralized governance and improve public service delivery”.
The J&K Assembly, which will meet on March 26 in Jammu, has earmarked March 30 and April 1 for members’ private bills.
