Kerala Congress Working President and former Union Minister PC Thomas has called for the construction of an airport in Kuttanad and said the region has the potential to become one of the top tourist destinations in the country. He said the state government should submit the demand to the Union government.
Mr Thomas said on Saturday (Dec 27, 2025) that Kuttanad was the only region in India located below the sea level and such landscapes are rare worldwide and gives the region a unique identity of natural beauty and distinct features. He noted that Kuttanad played a major role in rice cultivation and contributed significantly to the agrarian economy of the state.
Mr. Thomas said infrastructure development in Kuttanad should be planned with a long-term vision. He proposed projects such as an airport, a metro rail line connecting Alappuzha and Changanassery, a water metro covering the Kuttanadu water network and the establishment of flower and fish parks along with other basic infrastructure facilities to promote tourism and overall development in the region.
