The Impact Player rule, proposed by Ponting Punjab Kings, not only deepened the batting line-ups; it set them free. “It’s a really tough thing for bowlers now,” Ponting said. “The modern T20 batsman… they are big, strong athletes. The bowler has to miss by a few inches on line or length and he pays a penalty. Now it’s on a different spectrum. A six, a four… then maybe a one. It’s a reversal of not just the order but the philosophy.”When the intention is this absolute, how do you break it? The answers, both trainers agree, are not revolutionary, but old-fashioned and precisely executed.Hayden wrote them out like a checklist: wide yorkers, yorkers near the stumps, slower cutters to the pitch. “Variants aren’t new, accuracy is everything. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist,” Hayden said, “but you have to be close to perfect.”

How do you feel about the traditional pitching strategies that Hayden mentioned?
Ponting leaned into tactics. “Changing angles, better use of the bouncer. Looking for the unknown – maybe the mystery spinner, someone who can buy a few doubts in a format that rarely allows for that,” he said.
