Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins is likely to travel back to India by April 17 to rejoin the ongoing Indian Premier League franchise after undergoing a fitness test in Australia. Cummins, who is also Australia’s captain, will undergo a fitness test on Wednesday and if he passes it, there is a chance he could return to action for SRH.
The Australian has been dealing with a back injury since last Julywhich forced him to miss the T20 World Cup. His only appearance since then was a solitary Ashes Test in December. His prolonged absence has been a problem for both the national team and the franchise, given his key role in the pace attack and leadership duties.
According to a Cricbuzz report, Cummins is likely to pass the best test and get NOC from Cricket Australia. “Cummins, the Australia captain, will undergo a fitness test at home on Wednesday and if he passes – there is an element of optimism in the franchise – there is a chance he could start playing for them. Cummins is expected to be back in Hyderabad on April 17. SRH will play their next match at home on Friday (April 18),” the report said.
CUMMINS JOINS INDIA’S SRH DUO
Temper initially joined the team on March 27 ahead of the IPL opener against Royal Challeneger Bengaluru, but flew back home for final scans on April 4 after SRH’s match against Kolkata Knight Riders.
Before the start of the season, Cummins said he hoped to play the second half of the IPL if all went well. “I’m back bowling. I’m basically looking at bowling every third day at the moment. We’ve planned a plan to get me right into the middle of the tournament. So hopefully if nothing goes wrong I’ll be playing the back half plus the final,” Cummins said.
The news comes as another boost for the franchise, which has unveiled two homegrown players to bolster its bowling attack. Yesterday, SRH’s Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain have impressed the cricketing world by claiming four wickets each in their 57-run win against league leaders Rajasthan Royals.
Notably, Hinge took three wickets in his first over, including the prized wicket of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for a golden duck. The 15-year-old Sooryavanshi is the talk of the IPL as he has taken on experienced fast bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Josh Hazlewood with ease.
Cummins’ return is expected to further boost the pace of the offense for a franchise that has otherwise struggled to defend its units against batsmen.
