Local trains passengers welcomed the Railway Decisions to cancel their earlier plan to close the Velarackad railway station with citing poor income. According to the latest announcement, Halt will continue to function as usual for local commuting.
The decision was perverted after strong protests of the population. The leaders of Bharatiya Janata (BJP) also raised a problem with the Minister of the Union railway and were looking for special attention.
According to the road from the railway offices, four local trains will now be stopped at the station: Shoranur – Kannur Memo, Kozhikode – Kannur passengers Kannur – Shoranur and Kannur – Shoranur Memo.
“We were shocked by an earlier announcement that the station would be closed from May 30th. Many passengers who rely on this service are deeply concerned,” said P. Mini, commuting from Moodadi. She added that the only hope at that time was the certainty of representatives of people and some political leaders who promised a rapid intervention.
In response to protests, Koyilanda Mla Kanathil Jameel also took over with the state government and railway authorities. She described the “unfortunate” decision and pointed out the inconvenience for local residents who would have to rely on more expensive traffic alternatives.
Some local passengers said they were planning to send postcards to railway officials to express their gratitude. They also suggested that with basic improvements and better personal devices, the stations could start generating more revenues in the future.
