The Central Government will set up the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati, Assam, with the introduction of Indian Institutes of Management (amendment), 2025, Monday at Lok Sabha. The bill was presented by the Minister of Education of the Union Dharndra Pradhan.
According to the law, the Center, the state government of Assam and representatives of United Liberation Front of Assam signed a Memorandum on the settlement for the “versatile Assam development”. The center will be implemented by a number of development projects within a special development package, including the establishment of IIM in Guwahati.
The Government of Assam was looking for an IIM establishment that concerned due to the geographical location of the state. “Assam is one of the few countries with more than three crore populations that does not have IIM. According to the latest published results of higher education, more than five and a half students of the Lakhs are entered in the university institutions in Assam,” he said.
“The establishment of IIM in Assam will strengthen the overall education and development of the region and open up significant opportunities for students of the northeast region in India to develop managerial skills,” he added.
IIM-GUWAHATI will receive 555 Crore (2025-26 to 2029-30) for five years. “After five years, no additional support will be extended to the Institute, because by the end of such a period Iim-Guahati must generate sufficient revenue through their own internal accruals,” the bill said.
The bill stated that until the first IIM Council, Guwahati is established under the law, all powers and functions “will be performed and performed by this person or persons who can direct the central government in this name”.
