Several Japanese lawmakers, including former prime ministers Fumio Kishida and Shigeru Ishiba, were caught napping in parliament on Friday as Japan’s new prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, gave her first political speech.
In a now-viral video from Zvezdanews, MPs sitting in the back row of parliament can be seen dozing off during debates.
Here’s how netizens reacted:
Social media users made sarcastic remarks about the situation, joking that it was just tradition for MPs to doze off during the prime minister’s speech.
“In Japan, former prime ministers are supposed to take a nap during the current prime minister’s speech. Didn’t you know that?” joked the user.
Another added: “It’s a very normal situation. I’d be surprised if none of them are asleep!”
“Yes, a true reflection of many politicians, even in retirement they cannot stay away. On life support until the end of their political career,” one of them emphasized.
One user joked: “Please tell me more about this wave of ‘sleepiness’? Does it have to be some self-inflicted magic formula?”
“I wish the Republicans would do this, they would do less damage!” American user joke.
