The parents of an 11-year-old boy alleged that he was assaulted by the Parappana Agrahara police in connection with a complaint of gold theft.
According to the parents, the boy, a class 8 student, was accused of stealing a wallet containing 120 gm gold from a woman in Vinayaka Layout, Shantipura. The boy’s father runs a dry cleaner in the locality.
The incident took place in August last year when the woman allegedly stopped near his shop after returning home in an autorickshaw. A boy was sitting in a store and watching videos on a mobile phone. The woman allegedly gave him ₹10 before taking a bus to Krishnagiri in Tamil Nadu.
Six days later, the woman returned and filed a complaint that her wallet containing 120g of gold had been stolen, accusing the boy of the theft. The police first questioned the child and released him after he denied the allegations.
However, after almost six to seven months of silence, the complainant allegedly renewed the allegations. The parents claimed that the police then summoned the boy and his parents to the police station where the child was allegedly assaulted.
The family claimed the boy was beaten in front of his parents, intimidated by turning off the lights several times and forcibly forced to make a video confession that he had stolen the gold.
The police allegedly threatened the parents that if they did not return the gold, they would be in prison for three years. The boy reportedly suffered an ear injury and was taken to hospital.
They also accused the police of pressuring the parents to hand over the gold from their home after showing them the alleged confession video.
The alleged attack is highly regrettable, said Shashidhar S. Kosambe, Chairman, Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR).
The commission said it has taken serious note of the matter and registered a suo motu case.
The Commission has written to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Electronic City Division to ascertain the details of the incident. It was also decided to make a personal visit to the police station, collect information from the deputy and verify whether the minor was not subjected to illegal interrogation at the police station.
The commission has ordered strict legal action to be taken if any violation is found and has asked for a detailed report on the matter.
