A group of parents of students at Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidlaya (KGBV) in A. Kondur village in NTR district alleged that children were served poor quality food and that the hostel lacked proper sanitation and maintenance. Parents gathered at the institution after news spread that more than 12 students had suffered rat bites at KGBV a few days ago. They expressed anger at the poor maintenance of the dormitories, which house 240 students.

“The incident (rat bites) occurred due to unsanitary conditions at the KGBV. The septic tank was overflowing, there was no proper drainage and food scraps were dumped in the open, leading to dirty conditions in the hostel premises,” said a parent who visited the hostel.

Students also claimed that they were bitten by mosquitoes because the windows were missing nets and monkeys entered the hostels.

District Collector G. Lakshmisha, who inspected the KGBV and interacted with the students on Saturday (February 14), accused some hostel staff of negligence.

He said Special Officer M. Shyamala, who was found negligent, was handed over to the government. Speaking to The Hindu on Sunday, NTR District Girl Child Development Officer (GCDO) B. Vishswa Bharati said the condition of all the 12 students who suffered rat bites is stable.

“Proposals have been sent to the government to appoint a full director, construct drainage, fix iron nets on all 80 windows and raise the ground with sand to prevent water stagnation,” the GCDO said.

Poor maintenance

Deputy MPDO Sundar Lal, who was entrusted with the maintenance of the KGBV after the incident, said rats were multiplying in the hostels due to poor maintenance. “The septic tank was cleaned immediately, filling of the land with 150 trucks of sand is being done, chlorination and sanitation is being done in the hostel,” said Mr. Sundar Lal.

The Collector directed Mandal Education Officer (MEO-II) Keshava Rao, Mandal Education Officer-in-Charge N. Aravinda and KGBV Director N. Vijay Sundari to monitor the situation.
