Home Minister G. Parameshwara said he expected Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to continue in office for the rest of the term of the Legislative Assembly.
Dr. Responding to questions from reporters in Mysuru on Monday (April 6), Parameshwara pointed out that the party high command did not specify that Mr Siddaramaiah would be chief minister for the entire term when he was selected for the post in 2013, but continued as chief minister until 2018.
The High Command has selected him as Chief Minister in 2023. “So won’t he have to stay in office until the end of the term in 2028?” Dr. Parameshwara asked before adding that if he has to be replaced, only the party high command will have to take a decision in this regard.
He said there was no need for the party high command to specifically state that Mr Siddaramaiah was the Chief Minister for the entire five-year term, and rejected allegations that the high command was responsible for the prevailing “confusion” on the leadership issue.
He pointed out that the high command never spoke about the issue of leadership.
In the current political situation in the state, Mr. Siddaramaiah will continue as Chief Minister, said Dr. Parameshwara.
It’s DKS
When Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who reportedly aspired to the post of Chief Minister, caught his attention, Dr. Parameshwara said that Mr Shivakumar is not only the president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) but also the Deputy Chief Minister.
When asked about his own fitness to become the Chief Minister, Dr. Parameshwara said that Mr. Siddaramaiah had himself informed the legislators that all 224 MLAs were eligible to become the Chief Minister. So he is also entitled, he added.
On bypasses
Dr. Parameshwara also expressed confidence that the ruling Congress would win both the Bagalkot and Davangere South assembly seats in the upcoming general elections.
He said that the people of both the constituencies had shown support to the ruling party as the government had not only fulfilled the promises made to the people but had also adopted developmental programs that reached the poor.
Regarding the reports of black selling of LPG cylinders, Dr. Parameshwara said the police cannot act suo motu but register cases against the misuse of domestic LPG cylinders for commercial use based on complaints lodged by officials of the food and civil supplies department.
