Paralympic champion Sumit Antil set a new javelin world record

Two-time Paralympic gold medalist Sumit Antil broke his own javelin world record of F64 with a massive throw of 74.82m at the Indian Open Para Athletics International Championships in Bengaluru on Wednesday, May 27. The Indian star bettered his previous mark of 73.29m in 2023, underlining his performance.

The record-breaking effort adds another milestone to Antilo’s already decorated career, which includes Paralympic gold medals at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 along with multiple world titles.

Speaking after the event, exhausted but delighted Antil said he had been chasing this moment for years.

“I’m really happy, I’ve been waiting for this moment for three years. It should have been broken a long time ago, but it’s nice,” he told Revsportz after the event.

He reflected on the effort behind the throw and the meaning of success. “I could have done better, but I hope to do better at the Asian Para Games. This world record is not just mine, but the whole country’s.”

A RECORD YEAR IN PRODUCTION

Antil also revealed the technical adjustments he made in his preparation to finally break the mark.

“I made a lot of changes in the technique and the run, just to break the world record by the end of this year,” he added. “I’ve made a lot of changes to my rhythm and the way I attack. I wasn’t able to get power from my run-up before, but now with these changes I’m able to convert it. Hopefully I can improve that further and increase my distance even more.”

The performance further cements Antill’s status as one of the most dominant para spearmen in the world. Over the past few years, he has consistently raised the bar in the F64 category, redefining the standards with each major championship. His ability to repeatedly break his own records highlights not only his talent but also his relentless drive to improve despite already standing at the pinnacle of his sport.

Antila’s latest world record didn’t come as an isolated breakthrough, but as part of a steady progression in form and technique. Since his arrival on the global stage, he has continuously pushed the boundaries of the F64 classification, combining refined biomechanics with improved track speed. His recent focus on technical adjustments proved to be decisive, ultimately surpassing his previous best results.

With the Asian Para Games approaching, Antill will now look to take this momentum forward as he aims to push the record even further and extend his dominance on the international stage.
