A Papua New Guinea international cricketer has been jailed for three years after pleading guilty to a robbery on the island of Jersey, ITV reported on Friday (November 28). Kiplin Doriga, 30, a wicketkeeper who was in Jersey to represent her country in the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League earlier this year, attacked a woman and stole a mobile phone
The incident happened on Hilary Street in St Helier just before 2.30am on Monday August 25 as Doriga was returning to her hotel. Police said Doriga noticed the woman, punched her to the ground and took her phone. Details of any injuries the woman sustained have not been released. Doriga was arrested and questioned by authorities later that day.
The following day he was formally charged with robbery and subsequently appeared at Jersey Magistrate’s Court where he pleaded guilty to the offense on Wednesday 27 August. On Friday 28 November, Jersey Crown Court handed down a sentence of three years in prison.
Detective Sergeant Jim McGranahan of the Jersey State Police Criminal Investigations Unit praised the quick investigation, saying: “This was a quick investigation with an unknown suspect who had only been on the island for a few days. Due to the nature of the allegation, which was an attack by a stranger on a lone female at night, the police engaged a number of detectives, and stole him and other property.”
He added: “We will continue to fight violence against women and girls and prioritize the safety of islanders.”
At the time of the incident, Doriga had already played matches against Denmark and Kuwait, with more matches scheduled for later in the week.
