The Congress government is seeking to revive student union elections, which have been banned in Karnataka for more than three decades.
A nine-member commission was formed to recommend ways to conduct student body elections in the state to identify new leaders. The panel, which will have ministers MC Sudhakar and Sharan Prakash Patil, MLC Saleem Ahmed and Puttanna, besides former Youth Congress presidents and NSUI presidents, will submit a report to the government, Deputy Chief Minister and KPCC president DK Shivakumar said on Sunday.
Speaking at the Congress Foundation Day, Mr. Shivakkumar said that the current batch of leaders, including himself, came into politics through student body elections. “Later, when the violence escalated during the student body elections, it was stopped.”
