Panchayat president held in Ranipet for non-payment of cash

The 45-year-old panchayat president of Peruvalam village, which falls under Nemili panchayat union, was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly not returning the balance cash after the sale of land.

The arrested person has been identified as R. Kumaresan, a local DMK functionary. Initial investigation revealed that the victim B. Munusamy was a farmer in the neighboring village of Seruvalayam. He owned 40 cents of land (around 17,500 square feet) in the village.

Police said Munusamy decided to sell 40 cents worth of land at the prevailing market price. Kumaresan arranged with Munusamy to sell the property to potential buyers.

Later, the land was sold for ₹25 lakh. However, Munusamy told the police that Kumaresan only gave him around ₹5,000. Kumaresan also allegedly threatened Munusamy. A case was registered by the Nemili police and after investigation, Kumaresan was arrested and lodged in Vellore Central Jail. A probe is underway.
