In a bold move to rejuvenate infertile countries and support sustainable agriculture, Sreenarayanapuram Panchayat launched the project “Tharishu-Rahith Panchayat” (without infertile soil) that felt the transformation of Fallow Land into agricultural spaces. The initiative, which was carried out in cooperation with Harith Keral Mission and the Council for Biological Diversity of Keral, seeks to identify and cultivate unused land on all 21 departments of Panchayat.
The aim of the project is to encourage individual and group agriculture on land suitable for cultivation. In addition to plant agriculture, Panchayat plans to introduce crops such as coconuts, tapioca, medicinal herbs, bananas and indigenous fruit. In particular, fruit orchards will be set up on countries managed by religious institutions and support the participation of the community on green initiatives.
President Sreenarayanapuram Panchayat MS MS Mohanan emphasized challenges faced by a high level of salinity from the nearby Kanoli Canal and Coast, which discouraged many farmers. This led to the large areas of the soil lied unused. “This project will help identify and use such countries efficiently,” he explained, adding that a specialized organizational committee was created, which is headed by the initiative.
In support of the biodiversity, Panchayat will host a mango festival that will expand awareness with indigenous fruit varieties. In addition, efforts to clean inland ponds and breed of endangered fish species, emphasize water protection and sustainable fishing will be made.
Milk production
In cooperation with the Department of Dairy Product Development, Panchayat will also start the project “Dairy Village”, which aims to increase milk production. The project is in line with wider environmental objectives, including carbon neutrality, integration of climate resistant and protection of biodiversity.
The project will connect various stakeholders – MGNGS, kudumbashree, farm groups, schools, NGOs and business associations – will create a living ecosystem for sustainable development. This versatile approach is not only trying to fight climate change, but also ensure food safety, economic resistance and ecological balance.
