AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Saturday said the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s (TVK) effective use of social media has given the party results in the Assembly elections. Addressing his colleagues from Kancheepuram district, he emphasized the importance of using the platform to better disseminate the organisation’s stand on various issues and highlight the shortcomings and weaknesses of the state government.
The meeting marked the commencement of district leadership consultations with functionaries and senior officials to evaluate the party’s performance in the House elections, senior party functionaries said.
At the meeting, an opinion was voiced that children of party leaders should be called up for party work. “This also applies to Mithun (Mr. Palaniswami’s son),” remarked one of the functionaries.
In the district, the party contested three of the four seats, leaving Uthiramerur to its ally, the PMK. She polled vacant in all the three seats despite her candidate and former minister V. Somasundaram coming second in the Kancheepuram constituency. The party secured about 2.01 million votes with a vote share of about 24%. She finished third in Alandur and Sriperumpudur and retained her deposit. PMK lost too much in Uthiramerur.
series of Mekedat
In a statement, Mr. Palaniswami criticized the TVK regime for not pressuring the Center to stop Karnataka’s attempt to build a dam at Mekedat, taking no steps to release water from the Mettur dam and “failing to secure” the state’s share of Cauvery water from the neighboring state.
After paying respect to Congress legislators by inducting several of them into the Cabinet, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay should put enough pressure on the Congress government in Karnataka to prevent it from building the dam and ensure the release of water from Cavuera for Tamil Nadu, Mr. Palaniswami said.
