AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami is expecting a sixth win from his home constituency, which lends itself to his name, in his lifelong struggle to bring his party back to power. Agriculture is the main occupation of the residents of the constituency, which is located 50 km from the town of Salem. It covers Edappadi taluk, part of Mettur taluk, Konganapuram, Nangavalli and Jalakandapuram panchayats. A significant number of weavers live in these urban panchayats.
The DMK won here in 1967 and 1971. After that, the AIADMK won seven times, five of which were won by Mr. Palaniswami. He lost to the PMK twice in 1996 and 2006. The PMK also won in 2001. The Congress won twice, on its own in 1952 and as part of the AIADMK-led alliance in 1984.
