Despite their fears, the new Delhi maintained consistent contact with the Taliban and founded a technical mission in Kabul in 2022, a year after the group regained power to focus on humanitarian aid and development efforts. India also pursued backchannel diplomacy and participated in regional forums, which this year helped strengthen the links between the two sides.

India has long been home to tens of thousands of Afghans, including students and entrepreneurs, many of whom have fled after the Taliban take over. Although in November 2023 the Afghan embassy in Nový Delhi permanently closed, its consulates in Mumbai and Hyderabad remain open and offer limited services.
Gautam Mukhopadhaya, who was in Kabul in Kabul, Indian Ambassador in Kabul, said the Associated Press that the engagement between India and Afghanistan “may or may not lead to the formal recognition of de jure (Taliban government).
Mukhopadhaya said India should not be “this next step towards legitimizing the repressive and unpopular government of the Taliban” and “should keep some levers to allow an internally positive change in favor of all Afghans”.
Now, with the Afghanistani -relationship with Pakistan under tension because of problems such as the exclusion of refugees and border disputes, renewed engagement in India is considered a strategic step towards balancing Pakistani influence.
At the same time, India is also trying to limit the growing Chinese track in Afghanistan by expanding its own diplomatic and infrastructure.
We should keep some levers that allow an internally positive change in favor of all Afghans.
Taliban joined a high level with many nations and established some diplomatic ties with countries, including China and the United Arab Emirates. In July, Russia became the first country to recognize the Taliban government after removing the group from the list of banned organizations.
